Carmen Calvo's (*1950 Valencia) work is unpredictable. Through her paintings, sculptures, installations and photographs she creates a panopticon of the surreal, showing the inconsistency of our daily life. Objects of daily use, old toys or household goods serve her as work material. The thereof originated works are always processes of unmasking. Calvo's oeuvre directs us to take a look at everyday catastrophes and perversions which are usually hidden because of their private nature. Carmen Calvo started to work as an artist during the last years of the Franco regime, and being part of the "La Movida" movement she had an important position within the social transformation of Spain. She is also the first woman who represented Spain at Venice Biennale in 1997 and besides many national and international exhibitions in 2002/2003 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia Madrid showed a large retrospective. 2013 Carmen Calvo received the "Premio Nacional de Artes Plastics".
