Henriette Gunkel joined the department of Visual Cultures of Goldsmiths - University of London, in 2014. She is the author of The Cultural Politics of Female Sexuality in South Africa (Routledge, 2010) and co-editor of Undutiful Daughters. New Directions in Feminist Thought and Practice (Palgrave 2012), What Can A Body Do? (Campus, 2010) and Frieda Grafe. 30 Filme (Brinkman & Bose, 2013). She currently works on a monograph on Africanist Science Fictional interventions and on three co-written/co-edited volumes: Futures & Fictions (Repeater, forthcoming 2017), Visual Cultures as Time Travel (Sternberg Press, forthcoming 2016) and We Travel the Space Ways: Black Imagination, Fragments and Diffractions (Duke University Press, forthcoming 2017). Main Subjects: Sociology, Psychology and Social Pedagogy. 2000 Teaching Since 2007 Henriette Gunkel has been teaching in various institutions in the UK, Germany and South Africa. At Goldsmiths she currently teaches the BA year two module ‘Radical Imaginations and Speculative Voyages’ (part 1 and 2) and co-teaches the Core Module ‘Histories of Art’ of the Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Art History of which she is the programme leader. Henriette also contributes to the BA year one module Beyond Boundaries. Areas of supervision Henriette has been supervising and examining PhDs in the areas of feminist theory and gender studies, queer theory, politics and theories of the body, critical race studies, African cinemas, African science fiction, Afrofuturism and postcolonial cultural and media studies. Professional activities Henriette is project leader of the subproject ‚Concepts of Future in MediaSpaces’ at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies, Germany and Associated Senior Fellow at the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, University of Bayreuth. She is member of the International Advisory Board of darkmatter. in the ruins of imperial culture, and a founding member und co-editor of the online journal “Body Politics” (first issue launched in January 2013, funded by the German Research Foundation for the first three years. She also acts as a reviewer for various publisher and journals, including Third Text; Nordic Africa Institute; McGill-Queen’s University Press; the Palgrave Journal Subjectivity, ZED Books, International Feminist Journal of Politics, Journal of African Media Studies; Journal of Homosexuality.
