Federico Herrero’s work stands outside Latin America’s traditions of Conceptualism, muralist, and geometric abstraction, but references all these styles. In Pan de Azúcar (2014), titled after Rio de Janeiro’s iconic peak, a towering black monolith rises in a composition that captures, in the artist’s words, “the soul of the mountain.” Two other works by Herrero in the Guggenheim’s collection, Tristes trópicos (2013) and Landscape with Pyramids (Paisaje con pirámides, 2014) also draw on a pictorial language rooted in physical and mental landscapes.
