Brazilian fantasy artist and illustrator. Duval studied at the Escola de Belas Artes in Pelotas, Brazil before moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1957. He painted abstractly in black and white in his early career, but his best known work began and developed in the 1960s with his fantasy paintings and engravings depicting the history, geography, fauna, flora and civilization of his imaginary world of Wasthavastahunn . He has continuously added new works to his evolving humorous and ironic universe, and also written a series of clarifying texts about his very strange world. Duval provided 58 illustrations for the centennial commemorative edition of H. P. Lovecraft s At the Mountains of Madness edited by Donald Grant. Since 1966, he has exhibited individually and collectively in the best shows in Brazil and elsewhere.
