Nacido en Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Michael Asbury is a British/Brazilian art historian, critic and curator. He is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN) at the University of the Arts London (UAL). His PhD, at the London Institute (now UAL), investigated the work of Hélio Oiticica and its relation to modernism and Brazilian popular cultures. As a curator he has worked with several institutions including Tate Modern, Camden Arts Centre and the Brazilian Embassy in London, Galeria André Milan, Galeria Nara Roesler in São Paulo and the Museu de Arte Contemporanea in Fortaleza. His exhibitions included artists such as: Angela Detanico & Rafael Lain, Anna Maria Maiolino, Antonio Manuel, Cao Guimarães, Cildo Meireles, José Oiticica Filho, José Patricio, Milton Machado, Rosangela Rennó, Shirley Paes Leme and Yinka Shonibare.
