Studio Daniel Canogar presenta Amalgama Phillips, una colaboración con The Phillips Colletion (Washington D.C.) en el contexto del programa Digital Intersections, y en celebración del 100 aniversario del museo.
Amalgama Phillips es una pieza de vídeo generativa creada a partir de 550 obras de la colección permanente del museo. El código de Amalgama Phillips traslada las pinturas de sus ortogonales lienzos a formas más fluctuantes y en constante configuración. Las obras de arte pierden su proporción e individualidad conforme se contaminan y disuelven entre ellas. De igual forma, pierden su materialidad para convertirse en una serie de archivos digitales proyectados en las paredes del museo. Puntualmente, las obras recuperan su forma reconocible, para después volver al estado líquido por defecto.
La actividad incesante de Amalgama Phillips remite al constante flujo de información digital en la red y señala la reciente emergencia de nuevas formas de consumo de cultura y arte a través...del medio digital. Además, la convivencia de obras de distintas épocas en un mismo cuerpo sirve como metáfora de la anulación de un tiempo lineal digital: en internet el pasado, el presente y el futuro se disuelven y acontecen en un mismo plano.
Amalgama Phillips -ahora parte de la colección del museo- es una nueva versión de su predecesora, Amalgama El Prado, una obra creada en colaboración con el Museo El Prado en 2019, también con motivo del 200 aniversario del museo.
Varias organizaciones se han sumado a la celebración del aniversario de la Phillips Collection y han creado una agenda de eventos entre septiembre de 2021 y enero de 2022. Amalgama Phillips será transmitido en directo a través de un streaming en el canal de YouTube del museo durante la duración de la exposición. Junto con la inauguración, Amalgama Phillips se presentará en The ARC, galería asociada a The Phillips Collection situada en el campus educativo de artes del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad. En el marco del festival NextNOW de la Universidad de Maryland y junto con la inauguración de la exposición, Amalgama Phillips se proyectará en UMD en el Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building, acompañado de un concierto en directo de Thalea String Quartet. La Casa de la Cultura en Washington D.C. se suma a la celebración del centenario del museo y acogerá la obra Amalgama Vortex en la cúpula de su sala principal. Phillips Collection acogerá una charla entre la CEO y directora del Vradenburg, Dorothy Kosinski y el director del Museo El Prado, Miguel Falomir.
Nacido en Madrid (1964), hijo de padre español y madre estadounidenses, la vida y carrera de Daniel Canogar se ha dividido entre España y Estados Unidos. Ha creado numerosas piezas de arte público con pantallas LED, incluyendo Aqueous en la Organización Sobrato (Mountain View, CA, 2019) o Tendril en el Aeropuesrto Internacional de Tampa (Tampa, FL, 2017). Su interés por las posibilidades que ofrece la imagen proyectada le ha llevado a crear obras públicas de carácter monumentales como Amalgama El Prado, una proyección generativa sobre la fachada del Museo del Prado (Madrid, 2019) y Storming Times Square, una video intervención en 47 pantallas LED de Times Square (New York, NY, 2014).
Entre sus últimas exposiciones individuales se encuentran “Latencies” en Galerie Anita Beckers (Frankfurt, 2021); “Billow” en bitforms gallery (New York, NY, 2020) o “Melting the Solids” en Wilde Gallery (Geneva, 2018). Sus trabajos se han expuesto en el Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio; Offenes Kulturhaus Center for Contemporary Art, Linz; Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfallen, Düsseldorf; Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, Berlín; Borusan Contemporary Museum, Estambul; American Museum of Natural History, New York o en Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh.

The Phillips Collection presents a Digital Intersections project by Daniel Canogar in celebration of the museum’s 100th anniversary. Amalgama Phillips will premiere on the Phillips’s YouTube channel (September 8, 2021), followed by a site-specific multichannel projection (September 14, 2021-January 2, 2022).
The Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain joins the Phillips’s centennial celebration by presenting Canogar’s Amalgama El Prado (2019), originally screened on the facade of the Museo Nacional del Prado to mark the museum’s 200th anniversary, and now presented for the first time in the United States at the former Residence of the Ambassador of Spain (September 15-Novemebr 5, 2021).
Amalgama Phillips uses images of artworks from the museum’s permanent collection to create a generative digital artwork that liquefies all the works in a seamless blend of melted imagery. Whether experienced in-person or online, the images of the artworks melt into a rich abstract animation. The piece is constantly evolving, producing new visual configurations driven by an algorithm. The word, Amalgama, or amalgam in English, refers to the process of blending or melting of visuals. Conceptually, Amalgama Phillips explores how digital media is transforming our experience and understanding of art and the history of art. The swirling visual effects that have transformed the original artworks parallel our ever-changing reality as well as the ceaseless flow of information on social media that equally transform how artworks are consumed.
Born to a Spanish father and an American mother, Daniel Canogar (b. 1964, Madrid, Spain; lives and works in Los Angeles and Madrid) received a masters degree from New York University in 1990, but soon after shifted his interest toward projected image, installations, and public art. Canogar’s public artworks include Constellations, the largest photo-mosaic in Europe created for two pedestrian bridges in MRío Park (Madrid, 2010), and Asalto, a series of video-projections presented on various emblematic monuments, including the Arcos de Lapa (Rio de Janeiro, 2009), the Puerta de Alcalá (Madrid, 2009); the church of San Pietro in Montorio (Rome, 2009), and Storming Times Square in Times Square (New York, NY, 2014). He has exhibited at Reina Sofia Contemporary Art Museum, Madrid; Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio; Borusan Contemporary Museum, Istanbul; American Museum of Natural History, New York; Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; and Palacio Velázquez, Madrid, among others.

Intersections
Intersections is a series of contemporary art projects that explores—as the title suggests—the intriguing intersections between old and new traditions, modern and contemporary art practices, and museum spaces and artistic interventions. Whether engaging with the permanent collection or diverse spaces in the museum, the projects suggest new relationships with their own surprises. Many of the projects also riff on the nontraditional nature of the museum’s galleries, sometimes activating spaces that are not typical exhibition areas with art produced specifically for those locations.
