A sculpture that takes on the color of coagulated blood is a rare sight. It is a shade that certainly conjures up intense associations and conflicting emotions as well – passion, excitement, sensory pleasure, alongside fury, aggression and a sense of danger. This dichotomy makes it impossible to control the response, rendering it something of a challenge to put these bloody sculptures on show. Xawery Wolski was acting on impulse when he recast these forms, which had originally been white – a color typically associated with classical sculpture and endowed with an air of refinement and purity. Painting over the white with a darkly stark shade of red is a gesture that poses interesting questions both with respect to the motivation behind it and the audience response when these pieces are viewed for the first time.
