Throw a rock and see what happens. This simple gesture is the starting point for investigating the political and symbolic significance of the object and the body and the relationship between them in the present paradigm, using contemporary materiality -or immateriality- as the pretext. A number of philosophical trends advocate a new materialism or new metaphysics for making sense of
... the world, moving away from the old anthropocentrism and towards a new posthumanist scenario.
In this respect, Throw a Rock and See What Happens brings together a group of artists whose works revolve around the significance of the material used, its relationship with time, and a performative line that establishes a dialogue between the body and the object, all underpinned by a latent and intrinsic discursive signification. In other words, the works are all related in terms of their capacity to communicate through their materiality and temporality. These objects and movements -and the agencies that arise between them- cause a number of political, social, structural and historical themes to well up, themes that explore the relationships between man, objects and nature, and the symbols surrounding them.
Rather than an exhibition with a thesis or central theme, the project is conceived as a place where certain lines of thought converge - the notion of the Anthropocene; certain speculative realista trends that focus on non-human elements and examine their nature and mutual relationship as well as their relationship with us; Elizabeth A. Povinelli's work on materiality in late liberalista forms of power and the subject of the body; and some of Franco 'Bifo' Berardi's reflections on the relationships between language and corporeality in modern society - and traverse the exhibition space, turning it into a testing ground where different events and performances emerge in succession.
The space emerges as a place in a latent state, waiting to be activated: a remote geological location where different objects of a somewhat totemic nature accumulate. All the projects that form this scenario trace lines of intra-activity between the installations, the space, the bodies and the different elements in action, creating a circular flow of heterogeneous themes and concepts: the relationship between mankind and nature today; anthropological interpretations of the ties generated between the social and the natural or between human and non-human; historical and political narratives that revisit the images and emblems which we traditionally use to explain history and representation; reflections on the contemporary body and how it is moulded by certain discourses or ancestral readings that suggest possible representations for today.
Throw a Rock and See What Happens. Ultimately, it is all about seeing the world through different eyes and understanding the relationships that emerge within it in order to imagine a new paradigm.
