The exhibition Sí pero no, by Colombian artist Mateo López, is curated by Maria Wills and Julien Petit and will be on view from July 23 until October 15, 2021.
In 2020, the Banco de la República developed an unprecedented commissions program for contemporary Colombian artists. This program seeks to consolidate the trajectory of national artists through the production on an unpublished body of work, intended to become part of the Banco de la República's permanent Art Collection and thanks to the support of the institution.
For this first installment, Bogotá-born artist Mateo López intervenes the exhibition spaces at Casa Republicana - Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango with a new body of work titled Sí pero no, comprising 15 artworks in which the artist presents the evolution of his work over the last 10 years. In it, López goes beyond the concept of expanded drawing...with which he has been working since 2012, creating new forms of artistic expression that make the drawings materialize and become action. His work, moreover, is designed in such a way that in the interaction with the viewer it acquires other meanings, to the extent that it is expanded by the gaze and touch of these observers.
The pieces that are part of the exhibition are an exploration of the body as a message, of dance and movement that in their choreographies transcribe the same set of turns, signs and lines that are part of the practice of drawing. Among the works that are part of the show, collages, curtains and structures that intervene in space stand out. The exhibition is complemented by a series of 10 videos entitled Cuerpos Desobedientes ['Disobedient Bodies'] in which Mateo López shows the performative interventions he directed in different locations of Bogotá's Manzana Cultural del Banco de la República when the museums and libraries were uninhabited due to the pandemic.
