Fridman Gallery presents an outdoor installation Sketch in the Air by the Spanish scuptor Jorge Palacios. The sculpture will be on view March 3 - May 1, 2015 outside the Trump Soho Hotel (246 Spring Street, corner of Varick Street). Coinciding with the outdoor installation, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners will present Convergences, a solo exhibition by Palacios, showcasing some of his latest works and pieces never before exhibited in New York City.
Palacios' abstract sculptures explore the limitations of materials and forms in search for a balance between the sculpted surface and the surrounding air. There is a permanent tension between the line and the curve, and the space where both converge. Palacios looks to nature and science to find volumes and pure geometrical shapes evident in his practice. In some instances, his inspiration comes from forms found at the molecular level. The work strives for maximum...expressiveness with minimum expression.
Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, the architecture critic and curator, writes: "Palacios' work is irreducible and essential. But also contained, geometrically complex, singular. It is that concise form that confers specificity, character, humanity. It is not the sum of parts, but the reduction of an idea until it lacks parts, condensed, a single piece. Jorge Palacios' sculpture is of eloquent gesture. In the singular: one only gesture per piece".
In spite of his youth, Jorge Palacios has exhibited alongside such internationally recognised artists as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Sol Lewitt, Olafur Eliasson, Jean Tinguely, Ernesto Neto, Michelangelo Pistoletto and John Baldessari. He has exhibited in museums, institutions and leading international art fairs, and has been awarded numerous public commissions around the world. Palacios' work is in many important private and public collections.
