Descripción de la Exposición

Latin American Masters presents Timeline, an exhibition of recent paintings by Gustavo Acosta (Cuba, b. 1958). Acosta's Timeline paintings feature the neo-romantic architecture of a seemingly abandoned city. Acosta's treatment of surface, particularly the staining and layering of color, reinforce an awareness of time's imprint. Yet, his paintings have an enigmatic, A-temporal quality, as if haunted by history. Rather than ghost towns, they appear as constructions from a parallel world that can never be entered, where threedimensional space flows seamlessly into two-dimensional geometry. Viewed in the context of the Cuban Revolution, Acosta's cityscapes can be said to evoke both the grandeur and the shopworn artifice of the revolutionary ideal. Gustavo Acosta is one of a generation of Cuban artists that came of age in the 1980's, formed by the Revolution, with a view of art and culture tempered by the failed utopian promises of Marxism. Acosta's paintings have been exhibited worldwide, including: Museo Nacional, Havana, Cuba; São Paulo Biennale, São Paulo, Brazil; Museum of Fine Arts, Caracas, Venezuela; Palazzo Mediceo di Seravezza, Seravezza, Italy; El Museo del Barrio, New York, New York; Lowe Art Museum, Miami, Florida; and U.S.C. Fisher Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California. In 2013 Acosta was the subject of a major retrospective, Espacio de Silencio, organized by Caixa Cultural, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
