Navigating through drawing and painting, Cássio also ventures into video, sculpture and installation to expand his practice. His production investigates the relationships, tensions and contradictions of different socio-cultural aspects of Afro-Brazilian history. This approach relies on a constant search through archives, image databases and flea markets from which the artist collects old books, photographs, illustrations, newspapers, advertisements or old family albums to compose images that stimulate a poetic and critical dialogue about the construction of an idea of national identity. This visual universe, simultaneously autobiographical and fictional, political and poetic merges his own personal memories with collective experiences and traumas. His particular aesthetic composes images that explore aspects related to memories, fantasies, ethnicity and religious sincretism, creating a universe from which nature emerges as a metaphor for reframing and healing. In 2023, Cássio was the winner of the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize and his work was recently acquired and included in the collection of David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora, University of Maryland - USA
