Descripción del Artista

Elizabeth Dorazio lives and works between the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, with an art practice that includes drawing, collage, and installation to explore the mysteries of human relations to nature and the cosmos. Nature is the very essence of her work. By nature, she understands not only the environment and the enormous variety of living forms but also the dynamic principle that transforms matter and keeps it in constant movement. With this, she is also interested in how the random and unpredictable can happen and suddenly alter nature, regardless of how extensive scientific knowledge today is. Her practice is rooted in drawing, not only with pencil. She understands cutting with scissors as a way of drawing and directing the creation-in-process without the use of an eraser; thus, incorporating the randomness and unpredictability as part of her poetics and practice. Her collage work prioritizes the reuse of materials, such as rag paper, scrap wood, leftovers from her own process, as well as other tiny seemingly unimportant pieces. She does not throw away the remainder of her productions but rather accumulates them hoping to reintegrate them in the future. Large-scale formats and studio spaces allow her, and the viewers, to be immersed into greater-than-life work. The macro cosmos and the micro cosmos are mutual parts of each other in her compositions. Her practice, fully handmade, relies heavily on prolonged processes as she argues that “only by consuming time, reflection happens.” At times, her work includes collaborations with traditional arts and crafts practitioners, building dedicated frameworks of collaboration with women from Bedouin communities in the UAE, and textile experts from Afghanistan.
