Martin & Sicilia (1974 and 1971, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain)
José Martin and Javier Sicilia, live and work in Madrid, Tenerife, and Berlin
Recently awarded the "Premio Brugal Artistas Emergentesâ" in its first edition at ARCO 2007, for the best Spanish emerging artists, Martin & Sicilia started working together as a collective in 1995, in Tenerife. They work in a parallel way in the fields of painting and photography, the latter being an indispensable instrument in their process of artistic production. The duo reviews art history portraying themselves in their works, not as spectators, but as authentic protagonists of the scenes they depict. The tradition of painting converges in their work with the new ways of visual communication, photography, cinema, and publicity. Lately installation has been an important media to achieve the theatrical aspects of their images. Their themes approach marginal society and problems that coexist with the privileged Western cultures. They also refer to identity problems facing new generations in new political realities.
Martin & Sicilia work with Nara Roesler Gallery, Sao Paolo; Ferrán Cano Gallery, Palma de Mallorca and nina menocal, Mexico City. They have participated in the last two Havana Biennials (2003 and 2006) and the Dakar Bienal, Senegal, 2006 and have also shown at the CAAM Museum, Las Palmas de Gran Canarias
