O Prêmio PIPA não é simplesmente uma premiação de arte contemporânea que culmina com as exposições de quatro finalistas – selecionados pelo Conselho do prêmio – no Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro.
Desde sua primeira edição, em 2010, o PIPA atua em duas frentes correlatas, com desdobramentos temporais e visibilidade pública diversos. São elas: o processo periódico de premiação (indicação dos artistas, seleção dos quatro finalistas, montagem de suas exposições e premiações) e a construção e atualização permanentes da documentação das obras de todos os artistas indicados (numa média anual de 60 artistas por ano), embora os nomes de alguns deles tenham sido citados em outras edições.
A distinção destas frentes é importante para destacar que a ênfase midiática no processo de premiação decorre, justamente, de sua periodicidade ou de sua existência provisória. Atualmente, tanto eventos sócio-culturais quanto biográficos passaram a ser comumente pensados como situações únicas e...irrepetíveis, graças ao apreço do mundo moderno e contemporâneo pela novidade. Talvez por isso sua efêmera irrupção tenda a ser melhor valorizada pela imprensa, pelo público e por setores do mercado do que a construção rotineira de um trabalho de pesquisa, documentação e crítica regulares. No entanto, não se pretende aqui minimizar a importância da face renovadora dessa premiação para engrandecer o trabalho quase invisível dos bastidores que fazem do Prêmio PIPA um evento ímpar no país que chega agora a sua sétima edição. Como programa fundamental para artistas, teóricos, críticos, curadores, professores, estudantes e colecionadores é indispensável sublinhar a positividade estratégica do PIPA e afirmar, simultaneamente, não apenas a relevância de seus resultados cíclicos (mostra no MAM-Rio e premiações) como também, sua face menos conhecida voltada para a rotina necessária à atualização permanente de arquivos sobre a produção de artistas brasileiros contemporâneos mapeados cumulativamente a cada nova edição do prêmio a partir de 2010.
São ações que resistem à hierarquização sob quaisquer pontos de vista já que são complementares. Sem as escolhas do Comitê de Indicação e a seleção dos indicados em quatro premiáveis pelo Conselho do prêmio, não poderia haver um arquivo de artistas contemporâneos. É sempre bom lembrar que pesquisa e documentação permanentes não são desdobramentos corriqueiros em premiações. Sua prática aqui fomentada é, portanto, um diferencial efetivo entre o PIPA e a grande maioria das premiações hoje concedidas.
A difusão atualizada da produção contemporânea brasileira promovida pelo PIPA – tanto por meio de catálogos impressos voltados para o registro da produção dos participantes, quanto pelo site brasileiro e o em inglês, de abrangência internacional -permite o livre acesso a estas publicações e às informações permanentemente atualizadas sobre os cerca de 300 artistas participantes em toda história deste projeto.
Finalmente há que mencionar que as obras dos quatro finalistas de cada edição do programa são incorporadas, anualmente, à coleção do MAM do Rio de Janeiro que, somadas às doações (Prêmio PIPA, PIPA Voto Popular Exposição e PIPA Online) ao Instituto PIPA emprestam ao evento das exposições um teor permanente que o articula à pesquisa e à documentação. Tal frente de ação perene do PIPA vem construindo um arquivo essencial para o intercâmbio de informações entre agentes culturais e demais interessados que, contribui para a compreensão e promove a difusão de nossa arte tanto nacional, quanto internacionalmente.

O Prêmio PIPA está indo para sua sétima edição com exposição no MAM-Rio dos quatro finalistas de 2016: Clara Ianni, Gustavo Speridião, Luiza Baldan e Paulo Nazareth. Mais uma vez temos quatro artistas com poéticas contundentes, diversificadas e de alta intensidade política. Em um país e um mundo convulsionados por crises e desafios político-civilizatórios, o que se espera da arte, no mínimo, é compromisso sem adesão com o momento.
O modo como tal compromisso se manifesta artística e plasticamente varia de caso a caso. Em hipótese alguma se espera das linguagens visuais que se mantenham no registro da ilustração ou da denúncia; há mais complexidade no mundo do que a mera reprodução, mesmo que invertida, dos termos estabelecidos e institucionalmente hegemônicos. Novas subjetividades políticas constroem-se na desconstrução das convenções, no desengate entre o que se sabe e o que se vê, na produção imaginária de novos mundos possíveis. O possível é arrancado pela imaginação poética de dentro do impossível.
O PIPA segue apostando na ampliação do mapa artístico brasileiro, trazendo artistas indicados de várias constelações geográficas imprevistas, das florestas impregnadas por um universo simbólico atemporal à produção urbana nas periferias das capitais do sul, do nordeste e do centro-oeste do país. São 72 artistas indicados que participam da edição de 2016, sendo que em torno de 50% são indicados pela primeira vez – o que mostra uma atenção entre os indicadores para a novidade, para o que está surgindo e já parece relevante.
Deslocar o foco daquilo que já se conhece, sem abrir mão do perfil de uma trajetória recente e relevante, é compromisso do PIPA desde o começo. A premiação online busca principalmente incluir, dar visibilidade e impulsionar artistas sem tanta presença institucional. Já a premiação principal quer valorizar e qualificar as produções cuja circulação nacional e internacional já são mais consistentes além de mostrá-las em exposição numa das instituições mais prestigiadas do país – O MAM-Rio.
A criação do Instituto PIPA este ano, como um desdobramento do sucesso do Prêmio nestes últimos 7 anos, visa potencializar novas formas de fomento e disseminação da produção dos artistas que fazem parte do universo PIPA – que já somam mais de 350 nomes de todo o país. Um primeiro objetivo do Instituto é justamente qualificar o site com as páginas destes artistas, assumindo-o como uma verdadeira plataforma de pesquisa sobre a cena contemporânea brasileira. As páginas dos artistas já são consultadas por muitos pesquisadores, curadores e interessados em arte, aqui e fora do país, e é isso o que nos incentiva a melhorá-las, padronizá-las e buscar inserir nelas mais conteúdo – convocando, é claro, os próprios artistas e suas respectivas galerias, quando for o caso, a enviar material e contribuir nesta plataforma. Além disso, desenvolver dentro deste universo de artistas uma coleção para o Instituto que siga certos eixos conceituais e busque incorporar conjuntos diversificados de obras, documentos e registros dos artistas e projetos escolhidos.O Prêmio e o Instituto PIPA seguem em frente, apesar e na contramão da crise que vivemos no país. PIPA Prize isn’t simply a contemporary art award, which culminates in an exhibition with the four finalists – selected by PIPA’s Board – at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro.
Since its first edition, in 2010, PIPA acts on two related fronts – with temporal developments and public diverse visibility. They are: the periodic process of the award (nominated artists, the selection of the four finalists, setting up of the exhibition and the awards) and the construction and permanent update of the documentation of the works of all the nominated artists (on an annual average of 60 artists per year) despite the names of some of them already being cited in other editions. The distinction of these fronts is important to stress the mediatic emphasis in the process of awarding, deriving, rightfully, from its periodicity or from its provisional existence. Currently, these socio-cultural events together with biographical, start to be commonly thought as unique and unrepeatable situations, thanks to the appreciation of the modern and contemporary world towards novelty. Perhaps its ephemeral irruption tends to be more valued by the press, the public and by sectors of the market rather than the routine construction of a research work, documentation and regular critique. However, what is intended here is to minimise the importance of the innovative face of this award in order to enhance the almost invisible work of the team behind PIPA Prize that makes an unique event in the country and now reaches its seventh edition. As a fundamental programme for artists, theorists, critics, curators, professors, students and collectors, it is essential to highlight the positive strategy of PIPA and to affirm, simultaneously, not only the relevance of its cyclical results (exhibition at MAM-Rio and awards) as also, its lesser known face, turned towards the necessary routine of updating the permanent archives on the production of Brazilian contemporary artists, cumultivality mapped in each edition of the Prize from 2010 onwards.
They are actions which resist the hierarchy upon any point of view as they are complementary. Without the choices of the Nominating Committee and the shortlist of four artists made by PIPA’s Board there wouldn’t exist an archive of contemporary artists.
It is always good to remember that permanent research and documentation are not trivial developments in awards. Its practice here is fostered by an effective differential between PIPA Prize and the great majority of awards that exists today. The up-to-date diffusion of the Brazilian contemporary production promoted by PIPA- by means of printed catalogues focused on registering the production of the participants, through the Brazilian and English websites, of an international coverage – permits a free access to these publications and the permanent and updated information on around 300 artists who have participated in the history of this project.
At last, I should mention the works by the four finalists in each edition of the programme, which are incorporated, annually, to the collection of MAM-Rio de Janeiro which, adding to the donations (PIPA Prize, PIPA Popular Vote Exhibition and PIPA Online) to PIPA Institute, lend to the exhibitions event a permanent content which articulates to research and documentation. Such forward and lasting action by PIPA, has been building an essential archive for the exchange of information amongst cultural agents and interested parties that contribute to the comprehension and promotes the diffusion of our art both nationally and internationally.

PIPA Prize is in its seventh edition with the exhibition at MAM – Rio of the four finalists of 2016: Clara Ianni, Gustavo Speridião, Luiza Baldan and Paulo Nazareth. Once again we have four artists with striking, diversified and high political intensity poetics. In a country and world struck by crises and political-civilizing challenges, what is expected from art, at least, is a commitment without adhesion to the moment.The manner in which such commitment is manifested artistically and visually differs from case to case. Under any hypothesis it is expected of the visual languages that they maintain themselves in the record of the illustration or complaint; there is more complexity in the world than the mere reproduction, even if reversed, of the established and institutionally hegemonic terms. New political subjectivities are built in the deconstruction of conventions, in the gap between that what is known and what is seen. That what is possible is plucked by the poetical imagination inside the impossible.
PIPA continues investing in the expansion of the Brazilian artistic map, bringing in nominated artists from the various unforeseen geographic constellations, from the forests impregnated by a symbolic timeless universe to the urban production in the peripheries of the capitals in the south, northeast and central-west of the country. In total there are 72 nominated artists that are participating in the 2016 edition, where 50% have been nominated for the first time – which shows the nominating committee’s attention to novelty, towards what is emerging and already seems relevant.
Shifting focus from what is already known, without relinquishing the profile of a recent and relevant trajectory, is a commitment to PIPA since the beginning. The online award seeks mainly to include, give visibility and promote artists who do not have a strong institutional presence. Yet the main award wishes to value and qualify the productions whose national and international circulation are more consistent, as well as exhibiting them in one of the most prestigious institutions of the country – the MAM- Rio.
The creation of PIPA Institute this year, as a unfolding of the success of the Prize throughout the past 7 years, aims to potentialise new forms of fostering and dissemination of the production of artists that are part of the PIPA universe – which already sums up to more than 350 names around the entire country. An initial objective for the Institute is to qualify the site with pages for these artists, undertaking it as a true research platform on the Brazilian contemporary scene. The artist pages are already visited by many researchers, curators and those generally interested in art, here and outside of the country, and this is what encourages us to continuously improve and standardize them, aiming to insert more content as well – summoning, of course, the artist’s themselves and their respective galleries, when it’s the case, to send material and contribute to this platform. Furthermore, to develop within this universe of artists a collection for the Institute that follows certain conceptual axes and seeks to incorporate diversified sets of works, documents and records of the artists and chosen projects.
The Prize and PIPA Institute forge ahead, despite and opposite to the current crisis we live in our country. Long live both.
