Along with leading international artists from around the world, the 4th Ural Industrial Biennial also includes Russian artists, both established and young, from throughout the country, including the Ural Region.
“The curator has chosen a variety of names, from early cinema experimenters to contemporary generation of media artists, who research how technology influences today’s reality. He spent a considerable amount of time getting familiar with the Ural art scene, and among the chosen artists are those, for whom the biennial is their first experience of international exhibition”, – Alisa Prudnikova, the biennial commissioner.
In 2017 the biennial also expands its geographic boundaries and time frame. The program covers 28 cities, and for the first time it begins two months before the official opening. The Artist-in- Residence program routes with a total span of 19,000 km start beginning on July, 15. More than 100 hours of the intellectual platform and educational program events...are planned. “Along different editions of the biennial the program logic has been changing – from personal interventions in operating enterprises, to collective tours of invited artists across the Urals. This year the routes integrate weekend trips, contemporary art, and getting familiar with industrial heritage. Art-routes are a good reason to visit Ekaterinburg and see the biennial with your own eyes”, – Alisa Prudnikova.
The industrial specifics of the Urals is a unique feature and a constant theme of this cultural project. “The Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art is a rare example of a large-scale project of international significance in the Russian regions; it is innovative for the whole biennial system due to live interaction of artistic practice and industry. We invite influential representatives of the industry to cooperation, both as participants and as organizational committee members. We can confidently call the biennial a flagship project of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts as part of ROSIZO, since development and comprehensive support of the regional artistic community, and engaging a wide audience in the cultural context are among priority areas of our work”, – Sergey Perov, Director general of the ROSIZO State Museum and Exhibition Center.
In 2017 the biennial theme New Literacy will explore how the fourth industrial revolution is transforming the way we live, work, dream, and play. “The 4th industrial revolution is being shaped by new literacies around images, movements, and languages. All industrial revolutions transform our relation to space and time, as well as work and play. Today most of us walk around every day with an immense archive of images in our pockets; the changing nature of work, and the movement of the body, both individual and collective, defines a kind of choreography; language is adapting once again to this new revolution. The 4th Ural Biennal will explore this through its themes of “image as witness, the choreographies of capital,” and “the persistence of the word”, – João Ribas, curator of the main project of the 4th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art.
