"(...) Meanwhile in Portugal gay men heard about America’s gay liberation movement while suffering in silent isolation under a harsh dictatorship that denied that homosexual men and women even exist; not even allowing the word homosexual to be used. In the Salazar-Caetano era from 1932-74, all threads of homosexuality were erased allowing no gay culture or identity to develop. In this period it would seem that cruising would have been absolutely impossible as the punishments were too severe. But this of course was not the case. (...)".
