Descripción de la Exposición
From September 1, 2023 to January 7, 2024, Museum Folkwang will present the exhibition Chagall, Matisse, Miró. Made in Paris. The show is dedicated to Paris as the most important European center for the production of prints and artists‘ books in the 20th century. It presents classic masterpieces by artists such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. With works by Roland Topor, Jim Dine and David Lynch, among others, the exhibition traces the development up to the present day. More than 250 exhibits bring to life a central chapter in the history of modern art. For the first time, Museum Folkwang is presenting an extensive selection of outstanding portfolios and artists‘ books from its Department of Prints and Drawings, including Pierre Bonnard‘s Parallèlement, Jazz by Henri Matisse, Daphnis et Chloé by Marc Chagall, A toute épreuve by Joan Miró, and La Tauromaquia by Pablo Picasso. Important loans ... from other museums as well as from private collections complete the show. Selected paintings illustrate the connections between graphic art and painting. Also on display are lithographic posters by artists such as Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Pablo Picasso, which were also created in Paris. Designed by the artists themselves, but produced in large numbers, they fulfilled the claim of art for everybody. Paris has been the most important European centre for the production of artists‘ books with original prints since the early 20th century and remains a centre of attraction for artists from all over the world to the present day. The presentation therefore also features works created from 1970 and up to the present day, including works by David Lynch, who is known not only for his films but also for his work in the field of lithography. Chagall, Matisse, Miró: Made in Paris traces a history of over 120 years of the artist‘s book, the ending of which is not in sight even in the digital age. At the same time, it illuminates the path from painting to printmaking and addresses the spread of art into society.
