LOOP Barcelona 2021 will unfold into a series of hybrid proposals, both online and offline. Whilst the Fair will gather together the latest contributions to moving image creation as presented by commercial galleries, the Festival will feature different video proposals organised around a central theme.
"Diary of a Body"
While the pandemic has caused a progressive subtraction of the body from public space, it has simultaneously delegitimized all those places that encouraged encounter and exchange between people. As the strategy of social distancing responded to the desire of ensuring collective health, it also suppressed much of the freedoms of what we might address as the "social body". As Catalan philosopher Marina Garcés explains, "confined sociability is nothing new." Yet what it is unusual is its global and widespread dimension. In the same way, the social and economic consequences of the crisis have manifested with a certain classism, exposing those "categories of bodies"...less protected by institutions.
Being the protagonist of such historical conjuncture, the body - in its twofold meaning of 'set of organic systems that constitute a living (or non-living) being' and of 'cultural, political and economic association between people' - will constitute then the centre of this year’s programming. In the format of delocalized exhibitions, screenings and performances, the Festival will explore the potential of the body from both a literal and symbolic point of view, putting together works that stretch from the early days of video art to the present days.
