When you first told me the idea, I thought it would be a mistake. But I’m going to avoid mentioning any specific information from our past sessions to not compromise our confidentiality. I only have ten minutes but here are a few thoughts to get started:
My experience is not of a person, who has feelings, but of a bear who acts out feelings. A simulation of experience. I wonder if that is because of the distance the speaker feels from his own life. “Truth has the structure of fiction,” as Lacan said.
The video opens at night, with the sound of summer rain in the background—and yet we see snow. The disembodied voice of the speaker begins to narrate under the images until the camera slowly pans up to reveal its source. The bear is mutilated in a way that is both real and unreal. His words empathetic. There is the...suggestion that the bear is in dialogue—but the other person is never seen. We never hear the voice. We're allowed to look through their office and deeply into the items on the desk. The camera hovers outside of and enters the bear at points, all the while the room is empty. The room and camera seem to be characters in themselves.
I think it manifests your tensions, appreciation, and frustrations with the speaker. And maybe this makes sense, knowing the complicated relationship you have with him.
