ANOTHER SPACE is pleased to announce the inauguration of its Chelsea, New York location with the exhibition: Paulo Bruscky: Artist Books and Films, 1970-2013, organized by Los Angeles based curator Clara M Kim. The exhibition will focus on the prolific career of Paulo Bruscky (b. 1949, Recife, where he lives and works) a critical figure in Brazilian art history, known for his involvement with the international mail art movement, his extensive Fluxus archives, and radical experiments with technology. Founded by art historian and collector Estrellita B. Brodsky, as part of the activities of the Daniel and Estrellita B. Brodsky Family Foundation, ANOTHER SPACE is dedicated to building recognition of modern and contemporary art from Latin America. ANOTHER SPACE facilitates substantial grants to museums, universities and other institutions to advance research and produce exhibitions and publications in the field of Latin American art. ANOTHER SPACE provides a forum for guest-curated exhibitions and educational programs, of which this exhibition and its publication Paulo Bruscky: Artist Books and Films, 1970-2013 marks the first chapter. The exhibition focuses on Bruscky’s artist books and Super 8 films, which form a critical backbone of his rich and prolific career. Featuring over 100 artist books and 14 films, supplemented by related works, they will together provide unparalleled insight into the artist’s singular oeuvre. From his earliest books in the 1970s documenting urban interventions on the streets of Recife to more poetic experiments on the possibilities of the book format, the exhibition provides a rare opportunity to read Bruscky’s practice and his interest in the intersection of art, life and communication. The artist books and Super 8 films, ranging from documentation of performances to experiments with moving images, express a lifelong commitment to experimentation and political engagement. More than mere documentations of actions, they operate as foils for the activation of ideas and evidence of an individual passion and will to connect to the contemporary moment. Previous iterations of this exhibition were presented at Galeria Nara Roesler in São Paulo (Aug. 30 - Oct. 10, 2014) and the non-profit art organization, The Mistake Room in Los Angeles (Jan. 17 - March 14, 2015). Paulo Bruscky was born in 1949 in Recife, where he lives and works. Known for his active involvement in the international mail art movement (arte correio) and for the dynamic relationships he forged with international artists including Fluxus and Gutai artists working in New York, Europe and Japan, he was an artist-provocateur who used art as a means to fiercely challenge the status quo. From the early urban interventions challenging the role of art within an authoritarian military government, to highly experimental works using medical, communication and reproduction technologies, Bruscky occupies a formidable place in Brazilian art history. Clara M Kim is an independent curator based in Los Angeles. Recent curatorial projects include Mark Bradford: Tears of a Tree at the Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai); the mid-career survey Abraham Cruzvillegas: The Autoconstruccion Suites at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Haus der Kunst (Munich) and Museo Jumex and Amparo (Mexico); and An Album: Cinematheque Tangier, a project by Yto Barrada and Minouk Lim: Heat of Shadows both at the Walker Art Center. Kim was formerly senior curator at the Walker (2011-13) and Director/Curator of Gallery at REDCAT in Los Angeles (2007-11) where she commissioned and presented artists and architects from around the globe. Current projects include serving as a senior researcher at the Asian Cultural Complex in Gwangju and curator of Spotlight for Frieze Art Fairs. Kim received a BA at the University of California, Berkeley and an MA at the University of Chicago.
