Descripción de la Exposición
Travesía Cuatro presents Piales (La suerte de detener el tiempo), the fourth solo exhibition by Gonzalo Lebrija. The project is based on the Charrería, a practice coming from farming and livestock work in the ranch which became a sport after the agrarian reform in the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is the Mexican national sport and is considered UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Among the different sorts of 'charras', the 'piales en el lienzo' consists of stopping a mare's race by throwing the lace straight to its hindquarters. It is a beautiful combination between horse riding and the cowboys’ mastery of the rope or 'reata'.
As he has done in previous projects, Lebrija turns to the most popular elements of the Mexican tradition to introduce, disrupt and readjust the sense of time and perpetuity. Additionally, he draws on these Mexican symbols and their everyday use to dissect the social and cultural structures that support it.
Gonzalo Lebrija was born in Mexico City in 1972.
