Descripción de la Exposición
Sicardi Gallery proudly presents Putin's Pencils, an exhibition of new work by Marco Maggi. In his trademark fashion, Maggi transforms innocuous, everyday objects into avatars of powerful meaning. This will be the artist’s fourth solo exhibition at Sicardi Gallery. Please join us for a cocktail reception with the artist on Thursday, October 26, from 6-8pm.
In Putin’s Pencils, Maggi activates a set of vintage Russian pencils, video, and cut papers into a medley of philosophical metaphors. Playing with the boundaries of what he calls the “infraordinary,” Maggi creatively shifts the familiar into the realm of the monumental, while questioning knowledge, information, and visuality in a globalized world.
Based in New York and Montevideo, Uruguayan artist Marco Maggi received his MFA in Printmaking at the State University of New York (SUNY) in New Paltz in 1998. Maggi represented Uruguay in the 56th Venice Biennale in the Uruguayan Pavilion curated by Patricia Bentancur and has work currently on display at the MUNTREF Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the BIENALSUR and at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas in the exhibition Paper Into Sculpture.
Maggi’s work forms part of major collections, including: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, São Paulo, Brazil; The Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, New York, NY; De Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, among others.
