Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino is pleased to present two new exhibitions curated by Gilbert Vicario: The Poet, the gallery's first solo exhibition for contemporary artist Liz Cohen (b. 1973, Colombian-American), and Through the Eye of the Needle, a group exhibition featuring contemporary artists Olga de Amaral (b. 1932, Colombia), Sandra Monterroso (b. 1974, Guatemala), and Marina Weffort (b. 1978, Brazil). A text written by Vicario will accompany the exhibitions.
As Gilbert Vicario explains, "The Poet and Through the Eye of the Needle explore contemporary artists engaged with the texture and materiality of fiber as a means of exploring diverse formal and conceptual approaches to sculpture and three-dimensional works of art. At present, we are witnessing a moment where the history of modern art is being rewritten and course-corrected to include artists whose chosen media has heretofore left them out of the larger discourse around modern and contemporary forms and practices......Seen together, Through the Eye of the Needle and The Poet, effectively articulate for a much-needed reassessment of the values and materials that visual artists such as Cohen, Amaral, Monterroso and Weffort employ."
In our main gallery, Liz Cohen's constructivist installation Him features photographs, collages, weavings, and masks that grew out of the collaborative research project and 12-hour improvisational performative environment produced by the artist in collaboration with her friend Eric Crosley, a poet who began a failed gender reassignment surgery 20 years ago, which "explor[es] the constantly shifting definitions of 'self' of both artist (Cohen) and subject (Crosley)". In our upstairs project room, Olga de Amaral, Sandra Monterroso, and Marina Weffort "explore the tactility and materiality of fiber in unique yet overlapping ways," with Amaral using light and volume to "engage in a very specific vocabulary inherently connected to the kinetic art movement in South America," Weffort likewise "pay[ing] tribute to the history of constructivism and minimalist art through geometric pattering reminiscent of Agnes Martin and other modernist masters" with her gossamer-like textiles, and Monterroso "using traditional dyes, natural fibers and found objects" to "construct wall hangings that connect to an indigenous spirituality based on ritual and performance practices that celebrate her mestizo identity through tradition and memory."
